  • Periodontal treatment focuses on preventing, managing, and treating gum disease (also known as periodontitis). Gum disease is a common condition that affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth.

Common signs of gum disease include:

    • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing

    • Red, swollen, or tender gums

    • Bad breath that doesn’t go away

    • Receding gums (teeth look longer)

    • Loose or shifting teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to see a dentist for an evaluation.

Treatment depends on the severity of the gum disease. It may include:

    • Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove plaque and bacteria below the gumline

    • Antibacterial rinses or medications

    • Regular periodontal maintenance cleanings

    • In advanced cases, surgical treatment may be needed

Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and good oral hygiene at home (brushing and flossing daily) are the best ways to prevent gum disease.

  • These treatments all help restore your smile, but they serve different purposes:

Dental Implants: Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. They are artificial tooth roots (usually made of titanium) placed in the jawbone to support a crown. Implants look and function like natural teeth and are a permanent solution for tooth loss.

Root Canal Treatment: A root canal is done to save a natural tooth that is infected or severely damaged. Instead of removing the tooth, the dentist cleans out the infection from inside the tooth, seals it, and usually restores it with a crown.

Dental Crowns: A crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns are often used after a root canal or to fix a broken tooth.

Dental Bridges: A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It works by anchoring artificial teeth (pontics) to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap.

Your dentist will examine your teeth and recommend the best option based on your situation. Factors like the health of your tooth, the location, and your long-term goals will help determine whether you need a root canal, crown, bridge, or implant.

  • Over time, toothbrush bristles break down and become less effective at cleaning your teeth and gums. Worn bristles can’t remove plaque properly and may even irritate your gums.

Additionally, toothbrushes can collect bacteria, especially if they’re stored in a damp environment. Replacing your toothbrush regularly helps maintain good oral hygiene and prevents bacteria buildup.

Here are signs you need a new toothbrush:

    • Bristles are frayed, bent, or flat

    • You’ve been sick (cold, flu, or oral infection)

    • It’s been 3 months since your last replacement
