April is Oral Health Month!

April isn’t just about blooming flowers and warmer weather—it’s also Oral Health Month, a perfect time to focus on the health of your teeth and gums! 🦷✨

Your oral health isn’t just about having a bright smile—it’s closely linked to your overall health. Studies show that gum disease is connected to heart disease, diabetes, and other serious conditions. That’s why understanding and prioritizing your oral hygiene is more than just about fresh breath—it’s about protecting your whole body.

Your Teeth Don’t Have a “Check Engine” Light

Unlike a car, your teeth won’t flash a warning light when something is wrong. Cavities, gum disease, and infections can develop silently, causing damage before you even notice symptoms. That’s why skipping preventative care can lead to big problems down the road.

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

Even if your teeth look and feel fine, regular dental checkups are essential. The Canadian Dental Association recommends seeing a dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and exam. Some people may need more frequent visits, especially if they have:

  • A history of cavities or gum disease

  • Braces, dental implants, or other dental work

  • Health conditions like diabetes that can impact oral health

These visits allow your dentist to catch issues early, before they turn into costly and painful problems.

Prevention: The Key to a Healthy Smile

The best way to avoid dental problems is through consistent oral care and regular checkups. Here’s how you can prevent cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss:

  • Floss at least once per day as it will help you get out the food that’s out of reach of your toothbrush.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice per day or after every meal! Brushing your teeth removes the plaque and food trapped in your teeth and gums.

  • Avoid sugar/hidden sugar as oral health problems come from unwanted sugar.

  • Routine cleanings remove plaque and hard build up (calculus/tartar) which will cause many issues if left on your teeth and gums and will result in gum disease and tooth decay.

  • Quitting smoking with increase your sense of smell and taste, reduce the risk of oral cancer, and gum problems.

If you haven’t had a dental visit in a while, April is the perfect time to get back on track! A professional cleaning can remove stubborn plaque, check for hidden issues, and ensure your smile stays strong and healthy.
